Jazz History Term Paper
Guidelines
Assignment Breakdown
(timeline)
General Suggestions:
- Each student is required to produce a
term paper of substantial quality and quantity as a
cornerstone to completing their undergraduate music
studies.
- 4-6 pages typed (with standard
spacing-space and 1/2).
- Create a simple, clear, basic essay
(theme).
- Begin with a focused thesis statement
that is easy to support with research (not redundant or
too broad).
- Try to organize research and
paragraphs into a reasonable flow of thought.
- Support arguments with research
documentation (discography, bibliography, and footnotes).
- The student must consult at least 3
written and 3 listening resources.
- The instructor is looking for your
ability to communicate concepts and to include (at least)
the required information.
- Covering the minimum requirements does
not constitute an "A"
- Original creative thought
(conclusions) or perspective may constitute the grounds
for an "A" if this is well supported by
research.
- Use standard written English (avoid
slang).
- Use proper punctuation and grammar
(reflective of an upper level college student).
- Avoid first person references
("I") and personal opinion that is not backed
up with research.
- This is a factual account and critical
exploration; not a poetic or artistic writing assignment.
- It is advisable to have someone else
read through your work prior to handing it in.
Possible topics:
- The student should profile a jazz
musician of the 20th century that plays the same
(primary) instrument.
Specific things to include:
(This list is a starting place and not
necessarily all inclusive.)
- Make reference to the cultural
significance of the performer in the overall scheme of
American history.
- Make reference to the major musical
contributions (changes) each individual may have brought
to the jazz in general.
- Make reference to any specific
characteristics that define the person. Clearly list them
and examine them in detail.
- Consider examining a specific
composition or improvisation (whichever is applicable).
Examination should include reference to the 4 elements of
music (at least). Use as many specifics and details as
possible.
