general info:
- get info asap (as junior hs)
- watch deadlines carefully
- duplicate application materials in
case mistakes occur
- make sure everything is typed (or at
least in ink)
- find all options available (choose at
least 3 schools)
- take all opportunities to perform
- set up mock jury (with anyone)
- set up mock audition (with a teacher)

- (you are expected to play 6 of each of
these live upon request)
- (you are expected to choose 1 from
each category as your preparation and demo)
- ballad
- jazz standards
- groove
- blues
- odd meter
demo:
- every aspect reflects how much energy
and care you can put into a project of any type
- perform from memory on demo (as a
preparation for the live audition)
- 1st cut should be your best (medium or
up)
- 2nd best cut should appear 2nd on the
demo
- fade tracks directly to your solo
- use the best recording equipment
- use the best media quality
- test final product before release
- labeling should be professional
looking and computer generated
live audition:
- dress (tie/coat)
- clear and proper speech
- proper manners
- eye contact
- relaxed and straight posture
- if asked, pick what you sound best on
- memorize! (all parts equally)-work
harder on weaknesses
- know all aspects
(composer/words/verse)
- communicate intent clearly (even if
opposite of the standard)
- give clear verbal direction to rhythm
section before starting (include intro and ending
instructions)
- offer gratitude and thanks to the
committee and members of the rhythm section
recommendations should include:
- statements about the student's
character
- statements about the student's work
